SLIM RIVER, April 12 (Bernama) -- Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) through its subsidiary, SPNB Idaman Sdn Bhd (SISB) today launched a project to build 454 units of Rumah Idaman Rakyat (RIR) housing project here at a cost of RM120 million.

SPNB chairman Datuk Abdul Latiff Ahmad said construction work on the project which comprises 14 shoplot units, 154 terrace houses as well as flats and condominium units, was expected to take 24 months and would start immediately after it is approved by the local authorities.

He added that Perak was one of the states which had welcomed SPNB's proposal to build more affordable houses in the state.

"We are using a holistic approach for the RIR, with the cooperation of any state government which wants to give land at a low premium price for us to develop, and to date, we have four projects in Terengganu."

"Perak is one of the states which are ahead in this matter. However, there are states which have not responded at all, namely Selangor and Penang, while Kelantan has held discussions, because we are unbiased in this. Whether PAS, UMNO or PKR, as long as the person is a citizen, and he wants a house, we will build," he said.

Abdul Latif was speaking in a press conference held after the launch of the RIR project by Tanjung Malim UMNO division head Datuk Khusairi Abdul Talib here today.

Also present were SISB chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Kabit and chief executive officer of SPNB Datuk Ahmad Azizi Ali.

Abdul Latiff who is also secretary of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers' Club, said the decision by Selangor and Penang not to even respond to SPNB's request showed that the governments there were not concerned about the people.

"They did not even entertain us. This means that they are not serious about solving the housing problems of the people who need homes, especially those earning less than RM4,000 a month," he added.

Abdul Latiff added that besides Terengganu and Perak, an RIR project would also be developed in Rungkup, Bagan Datuk, Perak.
