80,000 Units RUMAWIP Housing Target Achievable This Year - Tengku Adnan

Last update: 01/02/2018

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- The target of developing 80,000 units under the Federal Territories Affordable Housing (RUMAWIP) programme can be achieved this year, ahead of the initial deadline of 2020, said Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He said that so far more than 80 per cent of the target had been achieved in the three territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan in the 'ready', 'under construction' and 'development order' categories.

Seven projects in Kuala Lumpur and three in Labuan had been fully completed so far, with each comprising 3,662 units and 332 units, respectively, he said.

Tengku Adnan said RUMAWIP became a catalyst to ensure that housing developers did not arbitrarily sell the houses at unreasonable prices when RUMAWIP, equipped with basic amenities and a conducive environment, was priced at RM300,000 and below.

"There are 27 projects still open to residents in the Federal Territories and applications can be made at the RUMAWIP portal with a loan facility provided by the Federal Territories Foundation," he said in a meeting with the media at his ministry in conjunction with the 2018 Federal Territories Day.

Touching on the Labuan Development Blueprint 2030, Tengku Adnan said the policy could boost Labuan as a tourism, business, oil and gas hub to benefit the people in the area.

The development plan launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Jan 18 was specially designed to transform the total economic landscape of Labuan by outlining three main focuses of economic, social and physical development, he said.

"In addition, we want to increase the population of Labuan, which today stands at only 100,000 people. This small number will not give a good economic impact and we want to increase its population so that the economic impact will be better," he said.

For Putrajaya, Tengku Adnan said, he had discussed with the National Economic Council and hoped that the monorail and tram services project in Putrajaya would be implemented as soon as possible.

"We hope the alternative transportation systems can be started quickly to overcome the congestion in the future as the population in Putrajaya today is about 85,000 at night and around 300,000 to 400,000 in the day," he said.
